Pediatric & Adolescent Tourette’s Syndrome

Core Clinical Research is currently conducting numerous research studies looking at investigational medications for pediatric and adolescent Tourette’s Syndrome.

Tourette’s Syndrome is a neurological disorder that can cause repeated and unwanted motor and phonic tics. These unwanted movements and sounds may cause distress and decreased quality of life for children. If your child has unwanted tics, they may qualify for a Tourette’s study. There is no cost to participate in a clinical research study, no insurance or payment information is collected. Participants are compensated for their travel and time. Participants receive diagnostic evaluations and study related care and medication from our local board-certified doctors.

Some signs of Tourette’s Syndrome are:

• Having unwanted or unintentional muscle movements such as eye blinking, shoulder shrugging, nose twitching, head banging, jumping, bending, flexing or making obscene gestures. Motor tics can be quick and simple movements or complex and orchestrated behaviors, but all the movements are always unwanted or unintentional.

• Making unwanted or unintentional noises such as grunting, whistling, humming, whooping, throat clearing, sniffing, repeating words or sounds, saying rude or obscene phrases, shouting, screeching, or making animal or bird noises. Involuntary sounds, phonic tics, may be a quick and simple sound or a complex string of words or phrases. In any case, the noises must be unintentional and unwanted.

• Motor and phonic tics may wax and wane, increase and decrease, from day to day. Tics may be impacted by your child’s daily stressors or other influences, such as if the child is alone or not. Both types of tics may also alternate, be present individually, or be present in a cluster of movements and sounds together.
